The final report was sent by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (IRE) to the EU Commission as Ireland’s response to their “Study on Waste Related Issues of Newly Listed POPs and Candidate POPs”.

This project focused on the sampling of bulky waste at waste management facilities with the objective of determining their POPs levels.  FT identified three household recycling centres which contained suitable material and sample sizes (carpets, mattresses and sofas) which were representative of bulky waste generation in Ireland.

A key aspect of this project was the procurement of suitable laboratories which had the technical capability of analysing this type of sample as there was no standardised method for the analysis of POPs in solid waste.  These laboratories were sourced in the UK and Germany and consequently preservation of the samples and maintaining chain-of-custody was a key concern of the client.  To ensure this, FT designed specific protocols to successfully deliver the project.

The objective of the cell was to determine the effectiveness of a number of alternative aftercare treatments of the tailings.

Lisheen is an active mine and is one of the largest producers of Zinc concentrates in Europe.  The mine is an underground operation with the resultant broken ore transported to the surface for processing in the concentrator plant.  This process results in a highly concentrated by-product which is deposited on-site in a 64ha tailing facility.

FT was appointed to conduct:

  • Geochemical and geophysical profiling of the tailings in the Tailing Management Facility
  • Analysis of tailings and water samples in newly fabricated lysimeter cells separate to the TMF

Monitoring of the demonstration cell cap was undertaken to determine extent of consolidation over time, vegetation growth, and to further understand and predict the onset of acid generation characteristics of the tailings.

The site was a fully engineered landfill, with lined cells and an active landfill gas extraction system.

The landfill in question was licensed by the EPA to accept non-hazardous municipal waste.  FT was appointed as ‘agents’ by the EPA to conduct landfill gas & odour audits as well as site surveillance of the site.  This appointment required the secondment of FT waste staff to site to conduct daily, and out of hour’s, odour and landfill gas monitoring.  Our staff received training by EPA staff in the appropriate methodologies.  Surveillance activities included; spot checks on waste loads, verifying daily cover and the methods used to place waste.

This non-hazardous municipal solid waste landfill was a fully engineered landfill with the landfill footprint occupying 11ha.  FT was retained over a number of years to conduct:

  • Monthly monitoring of landfill gas and water level measurement
  • Quarterly monitoring of groundwater, surface water, and leachate for a number of chemical parameters
  • Annual noise and ecological monitoring.

FT prepared quarterly and annual environmental reports for submission to the Environmental Protection Agency; as well as slope stability assessments, integrity testing and a Pollution Release Transfer Register (PRTR).
