Associate Director of Sustainable Infrastructure
Tom Clayton is a Chartered Engineer and Associate Director in the Sustainable Infrastructure team at Fehily Timoney, where he leads the Geotechnical Team. Tom has over 17 years of experience in geotechnical engineering across transport, energy, and infrastructure projects. He holds an MEng (Distinction) in Civil Engineering and is an ACEI Registered Professional Consulting Engineer.

Tom Clayton is a Chartered Engineer with over 17 years of experience in the geotechnical sector, currently serving as Associate Director in the Sustainable Infrastructure team leading the Geotechnical Team and overseeing a wide range of infrastructure projects across Ireland and the UK. Tom holds an MEng (Distinction) in Civil Engineering from the University of Surrey and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). He is also an ACEI Registered Professional Consulting Engineer and a qualified BREEAM Infrastructure Assessor.
Tom’s expertise spans transport geotechnics (road, rail, underground rail, active travel, and greenways), deep excavations and shafts (with major experience in London and the Middle East), and energy geotechnics (for wind, solar, and battery storage developments). He has also delivered complex earthwork stabilisation and geotechnical asset management solutions across road and rail networks.
He has acted as geotechnical lead on numerous nationally significant projects including:
- Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade Scheme (Fleming Award 2024, International Project of the Year – Ground Engineering Awards 2025)
- N19 Shannon Airport Access Road
- Coom Green Energy Park
- Wexford to Rosslare Greenway
- A737 Dalry Bypass
Tom is also experienced in contaminated land, peat stability, flood defences, and health & safety in design roles, including PSDP responsibilities on gas infrastructure and renewable energy projects. His analytical design capability includes advanced modelling using finite element analysis tools such as Plaxis, MidasGTS, and GeoStudio, among many other packages.
