The existing facility consisted of a large foundry building, an office building and yard area. Cavanagh Foundry Ltd. received planning permission to upgrade the existing facility.  A new Melting Plant and Ancillary Building were proposed for the site.

The Ancillary Building has an internal floor area of approximately 1,230m², and included painting plant, a fabrication area, toilet facilities, and other ancillary processes; supporting the main process of ductile iron manufacture.  The melting plant building comprises a portal frame extension to the existing building, with an internal floor area of approximately 470m².  The melting plant building houses the foundry charging plant including two new induction furnaces, with associated transformer building, furnace cooling, and fume extraction plant.  The furnaces in the melting plant heat incoming raw materials to a temperature of approximately 1,500 °C, before the molten metal is dispatched to the casting line.

FT prepared and successfully submitted the fire certificate applications for these buildings.  Our scope of work included:

  • Assessment of the means of escape from each building, including modifications to proposed building and site layouts so as to satisfy fire safety requirements
  • Appraisal of the internal and external construction materials in relation to the control of fire spread
  • Evaluation and review of access and facilities for the fire service, including provision of an above ground fire fighting water storage tank

FT subsequently procured the works contractor and supervised the construction of these buildings.
