FT’s key responsibilities were as follows:

  • Project management of  Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and planning application
  • Consultation with interested parties and stakeholders including the local authority, Inland Fisheries Ireland, National Parks and Wildlife Service
  • Extensive ecological surveys and reporting
  • Geology, hydrogeology & peat stability assessments
  • Water quality & hydrology
  • Landscape impact assessment (3rd party study)
  • Cultural heritage impact assessment (3rd party study)
  • Noise modelling and analysis
  • Other impacts on human beings and material assets

A detailed peat stability assessment was prepared as part of the EIS in accordance with Scottish Executive guidelines as the presence of peat and steep slopes over much of the site were issues of particular environmental concern.  Landslide susceptibility mapping was produced.

The presence of Whooper Swans in the lakes to the north of the site required a thorough vantage point survey and careful assessment of potential impacts and mitigation measures.  The proposed development is bounded by the Connemara Bog Complex, which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and proposed Natural Heritage Area and Oughterard District Bog Natural Heritage Area.

Planning permission was awarded for the proposed development in November 2011.
