N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass Road Scheme

The proposed scheme includes for the following:
- Approximately 13.6km of standard single carriageway National Primary Road;
- Approximately 9km of accommodation roads;
- Seven bridge structures, including one river bridge, five road bridges and one accommodation structure;
- Realignment of regional and local roads impacted by the project; including tie-in to the existing local and regional road network (total length approx.9km including all tie-ins);
- A grade separated junction with the R293 facilitating access to Ballaghaderreen Town;
- Various at-grade junctions.
FT’s Responsibilities on this project included:

N9/N10 Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow

The National Roads Authority(IRE) are currently carrying out an upgrade to the N9 national route between Kilcullen, County Kildare and Waterford City, a distance of approximately 100Km. The N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow comprises a 27.5Km section of this upgrade between Prumplestown, County Kildare, to the southern end of the existing M9 Motorway at Kilcullen, County Kildare. Phase 3 also includes a new single carriageway from Athy to the existing N9 at Moone.
The project comprises 27.5km of high quality dual two lane carriageway, 11.2km of single two lane carriageway, and the realignment of 13.3 km of regional and local roads. The scheme includes a grade separated junction and 44 principal structures including 19 road bridges, 3 river bridges, 3 farm underpasses and 2 farm overbridges.

N11 – Gorey By Pass
Client: Roadbridge Ltd.

This project included 23 km of standard dual carriageway national primary road, 3.7 km of standard 2 lane carriageway and associated realignment of side roads. The project included forty-five principal structures; comprising ten overbridges, seven underbridges, four river bridges (arched culverts), two railway bridges, eleven underpasses and eleven drainage culverts.
FT was responsible for Detailed Design, Quality Management, Value Engineering, Preliminary Reports, Site Supervision, Section 50 watercourse crossing, and Irish Rail approval procedures.
The detailed design covers all aspects of the project including:
- Road alignment
- Pavement design
- Arterial drainage
- Environmental requirements
- Mechanical and electrical services
- Bridge structures.
This Design and Build contract started in February 2005; 15km of the road was opened in July 2007 with the remainder opened in September 2007, ahead of schedule.
Notable Features A new bridge was required to carry the new N11 over the Dublin to Rosslare Railway at a skew angle of 74 degrees. The bridge is a Single span underbridge with clear span of 14m, allowing sufficient width for a doubling of the track on the north side of the existing track at some future stage, in accordance with larnrod Eireann requirements.
FT worked closely with Irish Rail and the contractor to achieve a speedy approval process and to ensure that the structure was constructed safely with minimal disruption to the adjacent live railway.
