Maximising the efficieny of a facility ensures that the full economic value of the facility as a resource is realised. This may involve assessment of the physical structural layout of the facility, the throughput of individual plant elements or operational practices such as traffic flow, and vehicle offloading. This process encapsulates the principles of ‘lean management’ where waste, or inefficiencies, are eliminated from an operation. FT has experience in auditing the different elements of waste and industrial facility operations and identifying areas where work practices or plant performance can be enhanced, resulting in more efficient facility operation.
Our Projects
Operational Audit of Materials Recycling Facility
Client: Glasgow City Council
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Capital Value: n/a
Key Facts: Operational audit of this existing materials recycling facility, to assess its performance at processing domestic dry recyclable material.

FT carried out two trials at the facility; the first to establish the feasibility of processing dry recyclables at the plant which was not originally designed to process this material; and a second trial of longer duration to identify potential areas of plant inefficiency. FT reported on the outcomes of these trials and made recommendations to increase operational efficiencies.
Waste Transfer Station Capacity Throughput Audits
Client: Bord na Móna PLC
Location: Ireland
Capital Value: n/a
Key Facts: A number of Bord na Móna PLC waste transfer facilities were examined in terms of their throughput capacity, to determine if these facilities were operating at their maximum efficiency.

The physical capacity of the facility buildings was examined along with the operational plant which they contain. Other infrastructural elements, such as the surface water and leachate management systems, which do not directly influence the throughput of the facilities but are required for effective operation of the sites, were also examined. FT reported on:
- Tonnage throughput
- Plant processing capacity
- Surface water management controls
- Leachate management controls
- Storage areas
- Vehicle marshalling
- Space capacity within the facility buildings.
