Brief Description

Fehily Timoney and Company (FT) undertake a full range of acoustic consultancy services for all stages of solar farm developments throughout Ireland to meet the specified noise criteria whilst maximising energy output.

FT provide acoustic input during solar farm design, including reviewing proposed site layouts, proposed inverter/skid locations and identifying constraints.

FT provide advice on construction noise from solar farm projects, including noise predictions and specifying appropriate mitigation measures, as required. FT undertake noise predictions and impact assessment of solar farm operational noise using the latest noise modelling software and have the required expertise for assessing cumulative impacts from proposed solar farm developments in combination with other developments, and designing mitigation measures to meet specified noise limits.

FT have prepared numerous noise impact assessments for a range of solar farm developments throughout Ireland, with recent projects including Ballylongford Solar Farm and Milltown Solar Farm.

Post completion, FT also offer a range of acoustic services to solar farm operators, including operational noise compliance monitoring, complaints investigation and tonal noise measurements.

FT Responsibilities

During the planning stages, FT carry out noise impact assessments of proposed solar farms.

Our in-house specialist team work with solar farm developers in the early phases of projects, providing advice on site layout development and constraints identification, including undertaking baseline noise surveys to identify existing areas of low background noise.

FT provide advice on noise emissions during the construction phase of solar farm projects, including carrying out noise predictions and specifying noise mitigation measures to minimise potential impacts on nearby sensitive receptors, in line with the best practice guidance outlined BS5228 Code of Practice for Noise and Vibration Control on Construction and Open Sites.

Prediction and assessment of solar farm operational noise is carried out by FT using our 3-D noise modelling software package ‘Softnoise Predictor’, in line with standard ISO 9613 Attenuation of Sound During Propagation Outdoors. Best practice acoustic guidance and evaluation criteria for noise from solar farm operations is contained in EPA document Guidance Note for Noise: Licence Applications, Surveys and Assessments in Relation to Scheduled Activities (NG4). FT apply this criteria for solar farm developments and our acoustic experts can specify site-specific noise mitigation measures to ensure that the applicable noise limits are met at nearby Noise Sensitive Locations (NSLs).

FT undertake noise monitoring in accordance with ISO 1996 Standards Acoustics – Description and Measurement of Environmental Noise, Part 1 (ISO 1996-1:2016) and Part 2 (ISO 1996-2:2017). For operational solar farms, FT have the capabilities to undertake operational noise monitoring to assess compliance with prescribed noise criteria, carry out complaints investigation and tonal noise assessments.
