The Joe Dolan Memorial Bridge was officially opened by the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD and Cllr. Mick Dollard, Chairman of Westmeath County Council on 6th September 2010.
The 560 metre bridge, one of the largest of its kind in Ireland, is the final link of the Mullingar Western Relief Road, and complete the orbital road around Mullingar. The project was procured under a Design & Build Contract with Jons Civil Engineering and their designers Fehily Timoney Gifford winning the contract. Detailed design for the project including structural, geotechnical, alignment, drainage, safety barrier systems and various ancillary works commenced immediately with construction mobilisation to site shortly after. Eighteen months later the official opening was attended by Ben Dolan, brother of the late Joe, who said on behalf of the Dolan family that It was a great honour to have the bridge named after his brother.
