Ireland - Phase 2 Landfill Capping Works at Marlinstown Landfill

September 2009

Fehily Timoney & Company has been appointed by Westmeath County Council to carry out the design and contract management of the Phase 2 Landfill Capping works at Marlinstown Landfill.

The cap will be designed to act as a methane reduction mechanism, and as a method of removing odiferous compounds.  This “methane oxidation” cap is proposed so that the risk of gas migration from capped areas will be reduced.  The works will be carried out in accordance with the site’s EPA Waste Licence.

The design of the capping system will involve the careful specification of the soil makeup of the cap, together with the design of gas collection systems (including extraction wells and manifolds) to tie in with the onsite gas collection system.  Leachate and condensate management systems will be extended, and the existing gas management system on Phase 1 of Marlinstown will be reviewed and remediation works to improve this system’s operation will be specified.

Surface water management will also be addressed in the design.  Marlinstown Landfill is surrounded by bog, so the management of run-off from the site will be of significant importance.

FTC will oversee the prequalification and tendering process for the construction contract, and will provide construction support to Westmeath County Council throughout the works.
