The construction of wind farm projects in areas of peat requires the need for geotechnical experience of peat soils to identify potential stability issues and design engineering solutions to overcome them.
The mapping, identification and assessment of the stability of sites within blanket bog has become a major aspect of Environmental Impact Statements and its impact on the proposed development
Over the past number of years, FTC has developed peat stability assessments to include landslide susceptibility mapping, potential landslide route modelling and assessments of the likelihood of slide events occurring within developments in mountainous sites. The calculation of the landslide stability model (LSM) uses geographical information systems (GIS) to integrate peat depth, vegetation distribution and data derived from the digital terrain model (DTM) to form a landslide susceptibility model which can be utilised in the suitability assessment of potential sites for development, the location of turbines and access tracks away from areas of potential risk of slippage and the identification of particular design or construction mitigation measures required to minimise the risk associated with constructing turbines adjacent to areas of deep peat or at high risk of slippage. The assessment also allows clients to manage the risk associated with turbines constructed in areas of deep peat.
Services Provided
- peat stability site walkover by senior geotechnical staff
- peat probing/insitu shear vane testing on site
- specification and supervision of Geotechnical Investigations and testing in peat soils
- characterisation of the site (peat information and vegetation cover/condition across the site)
- identification of past and present land use on the site (grazing, forestry etc.) and their current impact on the existing peat structure
- Geomorphological mapping of the site (mapping of slope angles, changes/breaks in slope, existing peat landslides scars if present, etc.
- identification and logging of previous peat failures on the site from published records and aerial photographs
- slope stability calculations
- peat landslide susceptibility mapping
- modelling of potential impact from slope failure of identified areas of unstable or high risk peat
- peat landslide hazard and risk assessment
- quantitative risk assessment where significant, substantial or serious peat slide hazards have been identified during the landslide assessment
- review by a multi disciplinary team cinsisting of a geotechnical engineer, engineering hydrologist and ecologist of the overall potential indirect and cumulative impacts and impact interactions of the proposed development
