Licensing is a key requirement of many water and wastewater schemes. Licences from the relevant authorities are required for activities such as water abstraction and discharges to public sewers, to watercourses, or to the foreshore.
The legislation governing such licenses is evolving on a continuous basis. As a result, studies such as low flow hydrology, pollutant dispersion and water quality assessments are required to be undertaken as part of the licensing process. The new Wastewater Discharge (Authorisation) Regulations, 2007 (SI No. 684 of 2007) in particular, require that all wastewater discharges from agglomerations of over 500 PE require a wastewater discharge licence.
