Hydropower provides electrical power from a renewable energy source, thus aiding Ireland’s progress in the reduction of carbon emissions and compliance with the Kyoto Protocol. Future hydropower schemes in this country will tend to be small schemes (less than 10 MW) and will harness energy from river flows, impoundments, etc., where the necessary head is available.
In the past, an inability to sell electricity to the grid prevented development of small schemes. Prospective generators can now make a formal application to build, own and operate hydropower plants and to supply electricity for up to fifteen years from these under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The opportunity to sell electricity for economic return has opened up a market for small hydro schemes.
As an environmental engineering consultancy with extensive experience in renewable energy projects, our core staff of specialist engineers and scientists possess all the disciplines required to design and construct small hydro schemes in a cost effective and timely manner.
