The study of hydrological extremes (both flood flow and low flow conditions) is an essential part of many civil engineering schemes. As national flood policy is based on ‘flood risk management’ rather than ‘prevention’, a minimum requirement for any proposed development on or near a floodplain is generally the undertaking of ‘flood risk assessment’. With the recent promulgation of the European Flood Directive, the importance of catchment based flood risk assessment and management has increased tremendously.
Similarly, the low flow hydrological analysis of a stream/river is of utmost important not only to establish quantity and quality of water for abstraction/discharge assessments, but also to achieve the goal set by the EU Water Framework Directive, which requires Ireland and other EU states to achieve good status of all waters by the year 2015.
Services Provided
The experience and expertise of FTC’s engineers, hydrologists and scientists enable us to provide a complete in-house service for detailed flood risk assessments for proposed developments; low flow assessments for abstraction/discharge and any other water quality related works; and catchment level detailed hydrological studies for hydropower and other schemes. Services include;
- catchment level detailed hydrological studies
- flood risk assessment and management
- low flow analysis for abstraction/discharge and water quality related assessments/works
- analysis of river/estuary mixing process
- river hydraulics using HECRAS
- hydraulic design of sea outfall
- hydraulic design of surface water attenuation and suspended sediment settling ponds
- hydraulic analysis of culverts and bridges
